Custom-Shaped LED Display: A B2B Quote Checklist

Practical LED display buying advice for overseas project buyers, event teams, integrators and commercial screen owners.

A reference image of a curved, faceted, circular, or freeform LED installation can make a project look ready for quotation. In reality, the supplier still needs geometry, viewing priorities, structural constraints, content behavior, service access, and tolerance information. Without those inputs, a custom-shaped LED display quote may hide assumptions that turn into visible gaps, distorted content, or expensive site changes.

This checklist helps architects, integrators, exhibition teams, and commercial buyers prepare a clearer brief before asking factories to price a non-standard screen.

Define the Shape With Buildable Geometry

Start with dimensioned drawings, not only a rendering. Provide overall width and height, radius or angle, segment lengths, transitions, openings, edges, corners, mounting surfaces, and the coordinate relationship to the building or exhibit. If the shape comes from a 3D model, agree on the file format and revision before engineering begins.

Separate dimensions that are visually flexible from dimensions that are fixed by architecture, doors, sightlines, or other trades. The supplier may need to adjust the active LED area, border, joint location, or module grid to create a manufacturable layout.

Choose the Right Construction Approach

“Custom shape” can describe very different products. Some projects use standard flat cabinets arranged in facets. Others use curved cabinets, flexible modules, custom frames, bevelled corner modules, or a combination. Ask the supplier to explain which parts are standard and which parts are project-specific.

The best approach depends on visual priority, budget, quantity, access, spare-parts strategy, and how repeatable the shape must be. Ask for an exploded drawing so the team can see modules, cabinets, frame segments, joints, power, signal, and service paths.

Plan Pixel Pitch and Resolution on the Real Surface

Curves and facets change how viewers see pixel spacing and content. A pitch that looks appropriate on a flat wall may need a different review on a tight radius or close-viewed sculpture. Map the closest and most important viewing positions, then calculate the pixel grid for each surface or segment.

Use a complete LED display resolution plan that shows active width, active height, pixel dimensions, segment boundaries, processor canvas, and content aspect. Do not wait until installation to discover that the final canvas is difficult for the content team to produce.

Show How Content Should Behave

A custom surface may be viewed from one hero angle, several sides, or while people move around it. Tell the supplier whether the content should read as one continuous canvas, repeat by segment, wrap around a column, meet at a corner, or align with physical objects.

  • Provide sample stills and motion content.
  • Mark the primary viewing direction and secondary positions.
  • Identify any seam where content must line up precisely.
  • Define whether text can cross a corner or transition.
  • Explain if cameras will record the screen.
  • Confirm the playback resolution and mapping workflow.
  • Request a content template before final production.

If the project will be filmed, include the intended camera setup and review the LED display refresh-rate requirements as part of the complete system, not as a separate marketing number.

Resolve Structure and Interfaces Before Production

The LED supplier, structural contractor, architect, and installer should work from one approved interface drawing. It should identify support points, adjustment range, cabinet loads, access openings, cable routes, ventilation space, finish boundaries, and responsibility for site steel or secondary frames.

Design Service Access Into the Shape

A dramatic shape can become difficult to maintain if modules, power supplies, receiving cards, or cables cannot be reached. Show which areas are front-service, rear-service, removable, hinged, or accessible through an adjacent room. Confirm the tool path and technician working space at corners, inside columns, and behind decorative finishes.

Special modules and frame parts may not be interchangeable with standard sections. Add project-specific spares to your LED display spare-parts plan, and label the exact location and orientation each spare supports.

Use Samples and Mockups to Retire Risk

For a high-visibility project, a representative mockup can answer questions that drawings cannot. Build the most difficult transition, tightest curve, corner, edge detail, or service zone. Review the mockup from the primary audience positions with realistic content and finish materials nearby.

  • Confirm the physical radius, facet angle, or corner transition.
  • Review visible seams and surface flatness.
  • Test module removal and access.
  • Check content mapping across the difficult area.
  • Inspect brightness and color from key viewing positions.
  • Record the approved construction and configuration.
